Treating Ich (White Spot Disease)
Ich is caused by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a protozoan parasite that attaches to fish and forms white cysts. Salt at 1 tablespoon per gallon — added in three equal doses over 24 hours — disrupts the parasite's osmotic balance during its vulnerable free-swimming stage.
For best results, combine salt with raised temperature (82–86°F). Heat alone accelerates the ich life cycle, forcing parasites through the free-swimming stage faster where they're vulnerable. Salt plus heat is one of the safest ich treatments for fish that can tolerate it.
