How Long Does It Take to Cycle a New Tank?

  • Week 4–6: Nitrospira bacteria establish and begin converting nitrite to nitrate. Nitrite starts dropping; nitrate rises.

Fishless Cycling vs Cycling with Fish

There are two main approaches to running your initial cycle:

Fishless cycling uses pure ammonia (no surfactants — check the bottle), fish food, or a piece of raw shrimp as the nitrogen source instead of live fish. You can let ammonia and nitrite spike as high as needed without worrying about fish mortality. The bacteria colony that results is typically larger and more robust. This is the recommended approach for new tanks.

Cycling with fish means adding a very small number of hardy fish (zebra danios are the classic choice) and doing daily water changes to keep ammonia and nitrite below 0.5 ppm. It works, but it stresses the fish and requires daily testing and water changes for up to 6 weeks. It's more work and harder on the animals.
